Ballet: Dating back to the 17th Century in France, ballet grew as an art form incorporating mime, music and acting. The classical steps are still taught to this day holding true to the French names. Ballet is a solid foundation for dance technique, posture and strength. Each class is composed of barre work, combinations across the floor and choreographed adages in the center floor.
Jazz: Think of it as a rebellion to the classical ballet. Turn in instead of out. Modern music and a whole lot of attitude. Jazz dancers are pure entertainers from the musical stages of Broadway to Las Vegas showgirls. Bob Fosse made this style of dance a hit with “Chicago” and “Cabaret”. Our classes consist of warm-up, across the floor technique and short choreography to some of the latest hits. You’re sure to find some classic 80s moves and jazz hands!
Tap: Tap dance began in the 1800s in New York City as a fusion of Irish and African Shuffle. This mix of different immigrant dance styles gave birth to a new American style. Fred Astaire popularized this dance with his syncopated beats. Classes are accompanied by pop music or anything with a strong beat. Tap shoes are recommended.
NEW! - Urban Contemporary: Influenced by the body’s unique potential for movement, Urban Contemporary focuses on a raw style that departs from any conventional Contemporary foundation. Incorporating the fundamentals of Hip Hop, Jazz, Yoga and much more, this class is a great way to expand any dancer’s vocabulary while giving them a fresh perspective of how the body can interact within a giving setting. Using floor work, improvisation, across the floor exercises and movement repertoire, every class is slightly different in composition.
NEW! - Stretch and Strength: This class is a great for reducing stress, improving posture, and strengthening muscles. It will help you improve the flexibility of your body thus enhancing your range of motion for all body parts. It's open-level so bring your energy and come try out this fun new class!
Dance Team: The performance team that makes regular appearances at the UBC Men's and Women's basketball games. The style of dance incorporates Jazz and Hip-Hop...not cheerleading. This is solely a dance performance team. Auditions are held in September.
Clothing recommendations:
Ballet: Tights, leotards, ballet shoes. Tight clothing is recommended to show off turnout and proper body positioning. Ballet shoes are important for grip and to ensure safety on the hardwood floors.
Jazz: Leather jazz shoes or runners, tight stretchy clothing. Shoes are important for grip.
Tap: Tap shoes (or hard-sole shoes), comfortable clothing
Hip Hop/Cardio Hip Hop: Loose baggy clothes, runners
NO JEANS / SKIRTS as they are constricting to movement.
